April 2012
I am the city, not the suburbs, I am vast and I am gritty
Watch me hustle, watch me bustle, see me flex my union muscle
Wander through my urban jungle, concrete beats, and ethnic jumble
See me shine, see me stumble
Watch me fall, watch me crumble
Come and burst my housing bubble
Watch me level, watch me rise
I fill and empty like the tide
Don’t sell me pity, light me up, the electric-city i become
See me severed, see me sprawl
Watch my traffic start and stall
I am the city, always busy
Lost among me, lost within me
My loud concord got you dizzy
Head feel light, brain feel fizzy
See my ships, see my trains
Back and forth
All damn day
press rewind, then press play
But I wont stop
Just all ways change
Don’t sell me pity, light me up, the electric-city i become
I am the city of tomorrow,
Live inside me, pick a burrough
Just mind the crime though
Because there is no Batman, or even Zorro
Listen to me late at night
From in the basement, or great heights
The streets are empty, see the sights
I am the city
Great dysfunction
Referendum, sign petition
Reelecting politicians, off the record its corruption
See them cut new shit deals
Try and ease housewives fears
Watch them squirm, watch them lie
See me forced to gentrify, see my tax base slowly rise
Huddled masses forced outside
Cant pay rent, cause rents too high
boys never flirt with me because once they see me they are so stunned by how hot i am they just walk away but thats the price you gotta pay when youre flawless
